Therefore, utilization priority must be selected based on the needs of patients and clinicians. Information about assessment of the new technology must always be ready for inputs to decision makers. The purpose of this study is to know the characteristics and utilization of the sophisticated medical equipments in Syaiful Anwar Public Hospital, Malang, East Java Province. This study was an exploratory study. Unit analysis were medical equipments with relatively new technology in supporting the diagnosis therapy, screening and therapeutic evaluation. Samples were chosen purposively with criterias as follows: equipments obtained in 5 to 10 years ago, price was more than US$ 40,000 and fulfilled sophisticated technology MOH's criteria. Data collecting of variable characteristics and its utilization were obtained from secondary data and interview of responsible persons. The analysis was descriptive. Utilization was defined as total amount of examinations with the equipments per year. Result: From equipments identified, some showed decreased utilization trend, while other indicated increase and no utilization at all. Decreasing utilization was caused by frequently equipment dysfunction or damage, lower patient utilization and high cost of examination. The dysfunction or damage of equipment were the result of improper storage, late detection of dysfunction or damage and irregular maintenance. Acceleration of patients visit and referral patients from other facilities caused higher utilization, Meanwhile, the equipments which had no utilization were caused by imbalance of supply and demand of the equipments as well as ignorance of the clinicians toward the availability of those equipment in the hospital. Recommendation: To increase the utilization of the equipments, it is recommended to carry out Health Technology Assessment for planning inputs. This assessment should include epidemiological, ethical, social, economic and cost as well as technical aspects of the equipment.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">WX 150-190 Hospital Administration and Health Facility Administration</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8601">2003</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>Badan Penelitian dan Pengembangan Kesehatan</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Article</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_1161"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_1161_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
