In order to control malaria, in 1994/1995, a study was conducted was that focused on the participation and practice of the community to overcome malaria using bednets impregnated with permetrin in East Mimika, Irian Jaya. The objective of the study is to improve the practice of the community in using impregnated bednets to avoid mosquito bites. The study was conducted in 3 villages, namely Mwapi, Kaugapu and Hiripau. The first two villages were given impregnated bednets. In Mwapi and Kaugapu villages, observations were made every night by cadres for 2 years (1993-1994), as well as by the investigators every 3 months for 1 year. Health education was also given to all cadres doing the observations. Each cadre was responsible to observe and educate groups of community members consisting of 10-20 household per group. Furthermore, continuous observations were done and information were given by each trained cadre, for 3 months during 1993-1994 period. The study revealed that in the first phase, the coverage of community using impregnated bednets were 36.2% (Mwapi), 40.1% (Hiripau), and 45.8% (Kaugapu). In the second phase, however, the coverage increased significantly to 61.2 %, 63.3%, and 64.2%, respectively. Overall, numbers of damaged bednets decreased from more than 60.0% to only 35.0%.
