Two approaches for estimating the rates can be employed, i.e. direct and indirect methods. In the absence of adequate vital registration system, an indirect method is usually used us altenative approach to estimate childhood mortality rates, using Brasstype techniques applied to survey data, National Social and Economic Survey (NSES) is one of period survey that provide data of number of children ever born and surviving by age of mother, as the basic for Brasstype technique estimation. Study on trend of childhood mortality was based on NSES data of 1995, 1998 and 2001. The study aimed at exploring trend of IMR and CMR discused on the variation for residential, regional and social economic characteristics. Estimation of childhood mortality rates employed Trussel Technique of West-Regional life table model. The finding showed that for both IMR and CMR, regional/domicile variation still persist, high in rural area and in eastern part of Indonesia. IMR and CMR is lower for those with high level of education or high quantile of household expenditure than for those in low level of education and low quantile. The study indicates that IMR or CMR for Indonesia is stagnant at level of around 50 per 1000 for IMR and 50 per 1000 for CMR.WA 900-950 Statistics.
