Increasing trend of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) related to central obesity occurred among Asian population with low BMI. Objectives: to compare the obesity a risk factor of DM based on BMI versus waist circumference among aged 25-64 in urban areas. Method: the database of Riskesdas 2007 were obtained: respondents with blood glucose variable, consists of 18.612 records of individuals from urban areas. DM was diagnosed if plasma glucose level > 200 mg/dL 2 hours after a glucose load of 75 g. Complex design approach was applied in data analysis. Results: The prevalence of abdominal obesity among aged ≥25 years in Indonesia were 7.8 % in males, 33.5 % in females, while the prevalence of general obesity were 17.2 % in males, 29.3 % in females. The adjusted OR of obesity based on waist circumference versus BMI were 2,26 (1.77-2.88) versus 1.03 (0.78-1.35) respectively as risk factors of DM among aged 25-64 in urban areas. Conclusion : The waist circumference is preferred to be measured in a survey, as a proxy indicator of DM burden, whenever the glucose load is not feasible to be carried out.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">WK 800-885 Islets of Langerhans</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8601">2011</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>Badan Penelitian dan Pengembangan Kesehatan</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Article</mods:genre></mods:mods>
