Data were collected from 251 children age 2 years old who were diagnose at puskesmas (Health Centre) as having pneumonia and ARI (128) and similar healthy children were included from neighborhood. Risk factors for pneumonia are : episode of ARI per year (4.6 vs 3.4),late referring to health facilities : day 1 (64.1% vs 66.7 %) and day 2 (27.3% vs 30.9%), number of families that some of their child died (12.3% vs 5.7%). Enabling factors for mother to rake care of ARI cases not to become pneumonia were better in control group, such as : early capability in recognizing pneumonia ( 37.5% vs 29.9%), greater capability in self treatment and seeking medical help (37.5% vs 12.1%). Puskesmas and posyandu are two places where mother from control group get most of CIE and case management with 96.4 cure rate. Twenty eight health provider which consist of M.D., nurse, midwifes, drugstore owners, traditional drug seller were interviewed. They are very rare reading medical journal ( 74.1%),never being trained on ARI /pneumonia case management (81.5%). Higher frequency were found in non-pneumonia group on activities like :giving anti - pyretic drugs (38.5% vs 28.6%), giving anticough syrup (73.1% vs 57.1%), antibiotics (56.0% vs 3.6%), more breastfeeding (25.4% vs 21.4%). The capability to recognize fast breathing and chest indrawing are low (4.7% and 25.0%).However, CFR of cases with pneumonia in this study were zero.
