Sebagai alasan dapat dikemukakan karena mudah ditangani, dapat diperoleh dalam jumlah besar, dan memberi hasil nilai ulangan yang cukup dipercaya. Semenjak tahun 1951, Lembaga Makanan Rakyat dengan nama baru Unit Penelitian Penyakit Tidak Menular Diponegoro, Badan Litbangkes, Dep. Kes telah menyediakan koloni tikus untuk penelitian- penelitian kesehatan dan gizi oleh institusi sendiri dan Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Indonesia. Pada tahun anggaran 1988-1989, setiap bulan dikawinkan 100 ekor tikus betina dan 70 ekor tikus jantan, sehingga diperoleh kira-kira 200 ekor tikus sapihan. Dari tikus-tikus stock dan dari tikus sapihan diambil 10% secara acak untuk pemeriksaan fisik, darah dan histologi organ.
