One hundred eleven out of 145 respondents (76,6%) states that they used laboratory animals for their activities. Ninety-nine out the 111 respondents (88,3%) mentioned that laboratory animals were absolutely neccessary for their routine and research work, and 96,4% of the respondent claimed that they had difficulties in procuring their animals. The sources of laboratory animals were commonly derived from conventional breeding stocks. They were bred by their own institutions as self suppliers or by livestock farmers. Based upon close observation during this survey to several institutions and farmers, it was concluded that their management and method of breeding were not appropriate and uniform. Therefore it is suggested that Indonesia should begin to establish a centralized and/or decentralized laboratory animal facilities in order to solve the present problem of procurement of good quality laboratory animals at reasonable prices.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">QY 50-110 Laboratory Animals.
