BBLR sampai saat ini masih menjadi masalah kesehatan masyarakat di banyak Negara karena dianggap menjadi salah satu faktor penyebab Kematian bayi. Sudah cukup banyak referensi yang membahas BBLR jika dikaitkan dengan masa gestasi dan status Kesehatan ibu, pertanyannya adalah bagaimana resiko terjadinya BBLR jika menurut determinan sosial, ekonomi dan demografi di Indonesia? Secara Keseluruhan ada sepuluh variabel antara lain: daerah tempat tinggal, jenis Kelamin bayi, usia ibu, pekerjaan ibu, status merokok ibu, Kemudahan akses ke pelayanan kesehatan, status ekonomi, jumlah anak (paritas) dan pemeriksaan kehamilan (ANC). Dengan pendekatan sosial, ekonomi dan demografi dapat diambil Kesimpulan: Berat badan bayi dipengaruhi oleh fakfor-faktor: jenis Kelamin bayi, paritas dan ANC. Berat bayi lahir rendah ternyata lebih beresiko terjadi pada bayi perempuan dan orang tua yang tidak melakukan pemeriksaan Kehamilannya.
