Sebenarnya sumber infeksi bukan terletak pada air, melainkan fecal yang berasal dari manusia atau hewan yang telah mencemari air tersebut. Pengujian kualitas air secara biologis dilakukan dengan cara memeriksa keberadaan mikroorganisme indikator pada air yaitu bakteri coliform fecal (Escherichia coli). Tujuan penelitian adalah menentukan kualitas biologis air yang digunakan di warung/restoran di Banda Aceh. Sampel penelitian sebanyak 98 warung/restoran yang berada di lima wilayah pasar di Kota Banda Aceh. Warung/restoran diambil sampel air minum dan usap alat makannya, kemudian dilakukan wawancara berkaitan dengan karakteristik tempat, sanitasi, dan higiene. Hasil pengujian kualitas air dan usap alat makan di laboratorium menunjukkan sebanyak 11,22% warung dan restoran menggunakan air yang terkontaminasi Escherichia coli, 24,49% menunjukkan hasil positif Salmonella, 56,12% positif Shigella, dan 40,82% positif Vibrio.
