Di seluruh dunia diperkirakan paling sedikit 4-5 juta kematian per tahun disebabkan oleh penyakit diare akut. Di Indonesia 40% dari kematian anak pada umur 2 tahun pertama adalah disebabkan atau disertai oleh penyakit diare akut. Penelitian ini bermaksud menyelidiki proporsi penyebab diare akut secara mikrobiologis dari penderita-penderita yang berobat di rumah sakit. Untuk pemeriksaan bakteriologik diambil rektal swab dari penderita dan dimasukkan dalam transport media Carry & Blair sedang untuk pemeriksaan Rotavirus diambil tinja dan dimasukkan dalam container yang disimpan pada suhu 4-6°C sebelum diperiksa. Pemeriksaan bakteriologik dilakukan secara konvensional sedang pemeriksaan Rotavirus secara ELISA. Enterotoxigenic E.coli diperiksa secara Elisa untuk LT dan intragastric inoculation untuk ST.
