Telah dikembangkan sistem surveilans sentinel DBD berbasis rumah sakit dan laboratorium untuk mendapatkan informasi yang akurat dan berkesinambungan tentang proporsi kasus dan strain virus dengue yang beredar. Sampel untuk penelitian ini berasal dari lokasi sentinel di 6 Rumah Sakit yaitu RS Deli Serdang di Propinsi Sumatera Utara, RS Wonosari di Propinsi Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, RS Kanujoso Djati di Propinsi Kalimantan Timur, RS Haulussy di Propinsi Maluku, RS Bitung di Propinsi Sulawesi Utara, dan RS Mataram di Propinsi Nusa Tenggara Barat. Serum penderita yang berobat di Poli Anak dan Poli Penyakit yang memenuhi definisi kasus infeksi dengue serum diuji dengan RDT (NS1), dan sisanya dikirim ke Laboratorium Virologi Pusat Bomedis dan Teknologi Dasar Kesehatan untuk dilakukan pemeriksaan serotipe DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 dan DENV-4 dengan metode nested PCR dan pemeriksaan genotipe gen E dengan metode sekuensing. Selama penelitian terkumpul 457 spesimen kasus infeksi dengue dimana 37% terkonfirmasi positif dengue. Sebaran serotipe dengue juga berbeda antara sentinel satu dengan yang lain. DENV-1 hingga DENV-4 ditemukan di semua sentinel walaupun dengan pola yang berbeda. Kasus dengue terlihat menonjol di bulan Januari-Maret 2015 dan pada bulan Januari terjadi puncak penyebaran serotipe DENV-3. Dari hasil analisis genotipe diperoleh: 12 sampel DENV-1 termasuk ke dalam Genotipe I. Spesimen serotipe DENV-2 merupakan genotipe Cosmopolitan dan serotipe DENV-3 termasuk ke dalam Genotipe I yang telah bersirkulasi di Indonesia sejak tiga dekade. Pemeriksaan genotipe terhadap serotipe DENV-4 tidak dapat dilakukan pada penelitian ini disebakan karena titer virus yang rendah untuk diamplifikasi secara konvensional. Dapat disimpulkan, keempat serotipe DENV yaitu DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 dan DENV-4 ditemukan bersirkulasi di lokasi surveilan dengue.
