One of the priority areas is the urban slum areas. A study on the environmental health and socio-economic conditions (especially on knowledge, attitude, behaviour, aspiration and capability of the community) was conducted in the slum areas in Jakarta. The respondents were 399 heads of the families and 56 prominent persons of the community who were interviewed using the questionnaire and direct observation. The result of the study showed that the environmental health and socio-economic conditions of the slum areas in Jakarta were poor. The construction of the houses 29.7% were semi-permanent, 28.7% non-permanent. More than half (59.4%) of the houses were overcrowded, 64.9% with poor ventilation, 52.5% with poor lighting and almost 50% had kitchen with no ventilation. People with habit of defecation on the river, gutter or fishpond 29.1%. People with habit of washing hand without soap after defecation 50% . Most people (99%) dispose their waste water into the gutter, but almost half of all gutters were not in good condition. Thereby mosquito larvae were found in more than 50% of the gutters. More than half (56.5%) of the households were using plastic bags for their solid waste and only 13.1% were using containers. There were 22.2% who dispose their solid waste into the river, gutter, fishpond, yard, etc. The health problems were mostly cough, headache, asthma. Almost half of them (46.1%) go to Community Health Centers, 22.2% to private doctors. 9.1 to private health centers, 6.3% applied self-medication and 6.1% went to the hospital to get health services. The income of the respondents 19.2% less than Rp 100,000; 47.8% were Rp 100,000 - Rp 200,000, 19.2% between Rp 200,000 - Rp 300,000 and 13.7% more than Rp 300,000 per month. According to the prominent persons of the community the major health problems in the slum areas were unsanitary solid waste and excreta disposal and unhealthy housing/settlement. They would like to have a sanitarian who permanently appointed for their areas and continuously encourage and give guidance on how to improve the environmental health.WA 670-847 Sanitation.
