Diantara tanaman obat tersebut termasuk fami1i-famili yang mengandung alkaloida. Berhubung alkaloida termasuk bahan bahan yang keras, maka perlu diperiksa toksisitas akut dan subkroniknya untuk mencegah terhadap pengaruh negatip pada manusia. Dua puluh tanaman yang diperoleh dari Balai Penelitian Tanaman Obat Tawangmangu diperiksa daya toksisitas akutnya menurut cara Weil,C.S.(l952) untuk, menentukan LD50. Dua di antara keduapuluh tanaman di atas, yaitu daun Wungu dan daun Kucai diperiksa daya toksisitas subkroniknya dengan cara memberikan infus bahan·tersebut setiap hari selama·1 bulan, 3 bulan dan 6 bulan (WHO-TRS; 1975) kepada hewan percobaan tikus putih (rat). Ternyata berdasarkan kriteria menurut CleasQn (1969), LD50 keduapuluh tanaman setelah diekstrapolasi untuk tikus (rat) per oral, tergolong bahan yang "Practically Non Toxic11 (PNT). Selanjutnya pada pemeriksaan toksisitas subkronik, tidak terlihat pengaruh negatip terhadap organ-organ vital yang diperiksa seperti : Paru-paru, jantung, hati, limpa, pancreas, ginjal, usus dan lambung, baik secara makroskopik maupun mikroskopik.QV 701-835 Pharmacy and PharmaceuticsPusat Penelitian FarmasiMonograph
