Untuk pembuatan tempe bongkrek maka perlu diperiksa daya racun akut dan daya racun subkronik terhadap hewan percobaan. Bahan yang diperiksa berasal dari Balai Penelitian Tanaman Obat Tawangmangu. Daya racun akut Oxalis corniculata L dihitung dengan cara W Weil C.S. (1951). Percobaan daya racun subkronik diberikan terus menerus selama 1,3 dan 6 bulan kepada tikus putih dengan 3 macam dosis yang berbeda (12,9 mg/100 g, 129 mg/100 g, 645 mg/100 g) dan aquades sebagai kontrol secara oral. Pada akhir setiap tahap percobaan diperiksa secara makroskopik dan mikroskopik histologi terhadap organorgan penting seperti jantung, paru, hati, limpa, usus, lambung, ginjal, pankreas dan testes. Dari hasil LD-50 didapatkan 15,62 (13,07 - 17,22) mg/10 g secara intraperitonial pada mencit. Berdasarkan kriteria Gleason (1969) daun Oxalis corniculata L termasuk bahan yang "Practically Non Toxic.
