Imunitas yang diperantarai sel T berperan penting dalam perlindungan terhadap infeksi Mycobacterium tuberculosis. SelTCD4+ dan CD8+ mensekresi IFN-γ yang menstimulasi fusi fagolisosom dan pembentukan radikal bebas untuk menghancurkan M. tuberculosis. ESAT-6 dan CFP-10 merupakan antigen M. tuberculosis yang dominan menginduksi IFN-γ. Penelitian membandingkan selT CD4+ dan CD8+ yang mengekspresikan IFN-γ setelah stimulasi antigen fusi ESAT-6-CFP-10 pada TB aktif.Sampel PBMC pasien TB aktif dikultur dengan dan tanpa stimulasi antigen fusi ESAT-6-CFP-10. Persentase sel TCD4+ dan CD8+ yang mengekspresikan IFN-γ diperiksa dengan flow cytometry. Sel TCD4+ yang mengekspresikan IFN-γ setelah stimulasi antigen dibandingkan dengan kontrol (1,51%±1,7 vs 1,23%±0,86; p=0,08) dan sel TCD8+ yang mengekspresikan IFN-γ (1,58%±0,99 vs 1.92%±1.13; p=0,86).
