TY - JOUR SN - 0853-9987 N2 - The acute toxicity of sodium nitrite in the period of observation for 14 days has been carried out on adult male and female rats. The substance was administered orally in the form of solution in distilled water. Each animal was observed carefully for six hours after administration, continued twice daily for 14 days, those including general appearance, body weight changes, signs of toxicity mortality and gross pathology finding. The signs of toxicity were tremor, ataxia and convulsion; mortalities were occurred in about two hours after administration. Some animal recovered after two-four hours. The LD50 in male mice was 121 (86,6 oo 169,4) mg/kg b.w, in female was 116 (86 oo 155,4) mg/kg b.w. Based on the LD50 value, sodium nitrite is classified as moderately toxic substances.
